Posttraumatic Stress Disorder
Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can result from exposure to any number of traumatic events including natural disaster, fire, explosion, auto accident, personal assault, combat or exposure to a warzone and physical, emotional, or sexual abuse as a child or an adult.
Following a life threatening situation, many people develop symptoms including nightmares, intense memories of the trauma, feeling constantly on "high alert" or "on guard", irritable with angry outbursts, difficulty getting and staying asleep as well as feeling numb or "empty" emotionally.
Over time, these symptoms can significantly interfere with a person's personal relationships as well as their ability to function on a daily basis.
The good news: There are time limited, evidence based treatments available to reduce these symptoms, often to the point of "recovery" from the disorder.
I am trained in Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Prolonged Exposure (PE) , and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), all of which are evidence based treatments for PTSD. These treatments are recommended by the VA and Department of Defense as first line treatments for the symptoms of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder.
